Pony Express Mini-Unit

A student-centered resource to help students learn and practice research skills, report writing, project and presentation skills. Students will use this project-based unit to learn about and report on Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist and political activist who was into slavery. Tubman escaped and subsequently made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, including family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. She later helped abolitionist John Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry. During the American Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the Union Army. In her later years, Tubman was an activist in the struggle for women’s suffrage. This notebooking, project unit can be assigned individually or within cooperative groups. After completing the written portion of this resource, you can grade it (or) assign students to do an oral and/or audio-visual presentation based on their findings/work.
